Bush is a Flip Flop

The Bush campaign has tried to paint Bush as a resolute leader while describing Kerry as a flip flopper ... but is that really true?

Number Fifteen

Bush Flip Flopped on campaign finance reform. First he promised he would veto the McCain-Feingold legislation, then he signed it into law.

In a commentary on National Review Online in 2002, Rich Lowry wrote:

“Is George W. Bush a man of his word? It seems a strange question to ask of the plain-speaking Texan who has just blown the whistle on the "axis of evil." But the answer, at least when it comes to campaign-finance reform, may be a disturbing one. If Bush signs something close to the current version of Shays-Meehan he will be committing his first bona fide, no-doubt-about-it, can't-be-spun flip-flop and broken campaign promise. Asked point-blank on ABC News's This Week on January 23, 2000 whether he would veto McCain-Feingold or Shays-Meehan Bush said he would.”

Just a few weeks after Lowry’s article was published, Bush signed McCain-Feingold into law. Note that Lowry called Bush a Flip Flop long before anyone thought of calling Kerry a Flip Flop.
