Bush is a Flip Flop

The Bush campaign has tried to paint Bush as a resolute leader while describing Kerry as a flip flopper ... but is that really true?

Number Sixteen

Bush Flip Flopped on the Assault Weapons Ban. In 2000 he promised he would extend it, but this year he quietly allowed it to expire.

During his first campaign for President, Bush pledged to renew the assault weapons ban. He still claims that he supports it, but actions speak louder than words on this issue – in contrast to other legislative initiatives, Bush has made no effort to lobby Congress to pass the bill, which had the effect of leaving it to expire a few weeks ago.

According to an article on WashingtonTimes.com:

"Asked about the president's lobbying efforts on the bill, [White House spokesperson] Mr. McClellan simply said Mr. Bush's support for renewing the ban was known. But he would not tell whether Mr. Bush had lobbied to extend the ban, as he has done for tax cuts, the Medicare prescription drug bill and other legislation."

Both houses of the Congress are controlled by the GOP - when Bush wants a law passed or renewed, he can make it happen. While he claims to be willing to sign a renewal of the bill, he's wavered in his commitment to get it through Congress.
